A major figure of 20th-century dance, Nicholas Georgiadis (Athens 1923–London 2001) was the commended set and costume designer for figures like Kenneth MacMillan, John Cranko, Rudolf Nureyev.
His pictorial style, that avails of inspiration from Greek-Orthodox architecture with gorgeous colours, created a form of performance which influenced a whole generation of scenographers from Yolanda Sonnabend to Stafanos Lazaridis. With Nureyev (this book celebrates the twentieth anniversary of his death), Georgiadis signed at La Scala the historic productions of Tchaikovsky’s Bella Addormentata (1966), Schiaccianoci (1969, performed for forty years), Minkus’ Don Chisciotte (1980).
