Young Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) made his debut in the theatre world with the Ballets Suédois and the Ballets Russes in the 1920s.
At the time he believed that opera was a genre on the wane.
And yet he would devote a considerable part of his artistic career to the musical theatre, signing dozens of performances for the leading Italian institutions.
Ranging from echoes of Metaphysical painting to a conception of a neo-classical and neo-baroque ‘Grand Théâtre’, his work as a set and costume designer was a perpetually evolving challenge, now won and then lost, but is above all the secret and problematic self-portrait of an outstanding figure in 20th-century art.
