Painter, scenographer and highly professional decorator, Galileo Chini (Florence 1873–1956) devoted a conspicuous part of his activity to the theatre, illustrating Sem Benelli’s plays and signing prestigious opera productions. .
His measured sober taste yielded to the temptation of the East on more than one occasion, and was overturned into fantastic visionary power in the historic world premiere of Puccini’s Turandot conducted by Toscanini at La Scala in 1926.
