The lyrical visionary vein of Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, Belarus 1887–Saint-Paul-de-Vence 1985) found a privileged expression in the theatre world. The ceiling of the Paris Opéra Garnier and the murals of the New York Metropolitan Opera celebrate an apotheosis of colours and signs which become musical intoxication, joy of living. For La Scala he did the sets for Ravel’s ballet Daphnis and Chloë (1975). The stage is bathed in the artist’s celebrated blue in the midst of gliding fish, embracing lovers and overturned worlds. Dance is sent flying.
